Star anise is a spice that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It has powerful bioactive compounds that may help treat fungal, bacterial, and biral infections.

Star anise has a distinct licorice flavour similar to that of anise or fennel, though its not related to either of these spices. It pairs well with coriander, cinnamon, cardamom and clove. In cooking, it can be used whole or as a powder. It also makes a great addition to sweet dishes and desserts, such as baked fruit, pies, quick bread and muffins.
